Proper English was my first exploration of historical romance novels, and it was definitely a good place to start. The murder is discovered on page of a page book, allowing K J Charles time to both make the victim thoroughly hateful and to get our heroines realising their love for each other. "Proper English" is almost like a dialect of English, one in which no slang is used, and things are pronounced quite deliberately.
